During World War II Fort Benning had 197,159 acres (797.87 km 2) with billeting space for 3,970 officers and 94,873 enlisted persons. The barracks were two-story WWII-era buildings. The municipality has an area of 2,338.4km2 (902.9sqmi) in the south-central part of the state, situated in the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains, on the bank of the Huacapa River.
